Blanchard grinding is a term which through common usage in the manufacturing industry has come to be recognized throughout the world as identifying the most efficient method of finishing flat surface on virtually any material. The finish is produced by utilizing a vertical grinding spindle with a cylindrical grinding wheel and, generally, a flat magnetic chuck to hold ferrous material to be finished. As the magnetic chuck rotates, it carries the work under the first side and then the other side of the wheel face which is fed down in the work to remove material. This action creates the characteristic cross-hatch pattern that has come to be the best indication of a true “Blanchard Grind”.
The rotary motion of the magnetic chuck allows work to be loaded in a full circle so that there are no end pieces. This combined with the grinding pressures exerted by the grinding spindle produce the “Blanchard Grind”. This combination produces finished work to flatness and size across the magnetic chuck that is to extremely close tolerances. As a testament to their accuracy and precision, all remanufactured and new Blanchard 22AD-42 and smaller grinders must be able to hold .0002″ across the table before they are shipped.
The inherent rigidity of the vertical grinding spindle and of the magnetic chuck combined with the broad abrasive surface of the grinding wheel means high-powered grinding with no loss of accuracy. Blanchard grinding is unsurpassed in its ability to remove large amounts of material in a minimum amount of time while retaining extreme accuracy for finished work.
While other companies do manufacture vertical surface grinders, nothing but a Blanchard can truly produce a Blanchard grind. Over a 100 years of engineering archives and the talents of Bourn & Koch’s machine tool engineers ensure that the Blanchard legacy is kept alive and well.
